Marc Abel: Turning Life's Obstacles Into Art Through Mephitideus Interactive
He dreamed of making video games, coded between feedings and diaper changes, and found his first fans in his own daughters. Behind Skunked: Way of the Spray is another story: an independent creator turning real-life experiences into art.
For Marc Abel, founder of Mephitideus Interactive, video games have always been about more than entertainment. They are a way to build worlds, express ideas, and transform personal experiences into something other people can see, play, and interpret for themselves.
That philosophy is at the heart of Skunked: Way of the Spray, the independent action-platforming game Abel developed from an early Python prototype into a published release.
The journey began with a lifelong dream of making games. It grew through the encouragement of his daughters, the demands of family life, and the determination to create something original. But the finished game also carries something less immediately obvious: a collection of life experiences reimagined as cartoon characters and enemies.
For Abel, Skunked is not simply a game. It is an art release.
A Game Born Between Family Responsibilities
When Abel first began coding an early version of Skunked in Python, he was raising three daughters. His two oldest, then seven and four, started playing the game and quickly became hooked. They wanted him to build a full version.
Their enthusiasm became a driving force behind the project.
For much of the development process, Abel was coding while feeding the baby and changing diapers. He worked on his dream amid the everyday responsibilities of being a father, finding opportunities to create whenever he could.
What began as a personal ambition became a mission to build something his daughters could enjoy—and eventually something he could share with the world.
The result was Skunked: Way of the Spray, a game featuring cartoon skunk characters, platforming, exploration, boss fights, and a signature spray-based combat mechanic.
Yet the game's colorful enemies have a story of their own.
When Real Life Becomes the Artwork
Abel draws inspiration from the experiences that shape everyday life. In Skunked, those experiences take the form of exaggerated characters, absurd attacks, and obstacles players must overcome.
Consider the kamikaze delivery skunk: a character inspired by the familiar pressures and unpredictability of door-to-door delivery work. Or the enemy that throws burritos, transforming an everyday food-related experience into a ridiculous video game threat.
Another enemy, the jumping blocker, draws from Abel's experiences working around coffee chains. What might otherwise remain an ordinary memory of workplace frustrations becomes a character designed to challenge the player.
These aren't simply random enemies added to fill a level. They are examples of Abel's creative process: taking recognizable fragments of real life, exaggerating them, and giving them a new identity inside a fictional world.
The approach turns the game into a form of personal expression. Work experiences, daily frustrations, and the hurdles people encounter in life become the raw material for interactive art.
In this world, the obstacles that once existed outside the game can be confronted on the screen. The ordinary becomes absurd, the frustrating becomes entertaining, and personal memories become something players can engage with through gameplay.
It is an approach that allows humor and creativity to coexist with a more personal idea: life gives us obstacles, but we can choose what to make of them.
Every Enemy Has a Story
The enemies in Skunked: Way of the Spray can be understood on two levels. On the surface, they are opponents with distinct behaviors that challenge the player. Beneath that surface, they reflect the experiences and observations that helped inspire them.
That gives the game's design a personal dimension. Instead of separating his artwork from his life, Abel uses his life as a source of creative material.
A delivery experience becomes a kamikaze skunk. A food-related memory becomes a burrito-throwing menace. A workplace challenge becomes a jumping blocker.
The transformation is part of the art itself.
Players don't need to know the background of every enemy to enjoy the game. The characters can stand on their own as humorous creations. But knowing their origins offers another way to appreciate the work: each one represents an experience Abel chose to reinterpret rather than simply leave behind.
That is what makes Skunked both an interactive product and a personal artistic statement.
From a Personal Project to Mephitideus Interactive
Abel founded Mephitideus Interactive to pursue his ambitions in independent game development. His work spans programming, character creation, visual design, web development, and the practical challenges of publishing original entertainment.
His earlier Skunk Squad project explored digital artwork and generative collectibles, reflecting the same interest in creating original characters and building systems around them.
With Skunked: Way of the Spray, those creative interests come together in a playable form. The characters are artwork, the game mechanics give that artwork movement and purpose, and the levels create a space in which players interact with the results.
Building and publishing the game was a major step in turning Abel's lifelong ambition into reality. It also established a foundation for Mephitideus Interactive to continue developing original projects.
The next challenge is reaching more players and building a sustainable independent studio—work that requires not only creativity and technical ability but also persistence, marketing, and community building.
Making Something Cool for the World
At the center of Abel's journey are his three daughters. The enthusiasm of his two oldest helped push the original Python game toward a full release, and their influence remains part of the reason he continues to create.
His goal has never been limited to proving that he could write code or publish a game. He wants to make something cool for the world.
That ambition connects the personal and artistic sides of Skunked. A father pursued a lifelong dream while raising his family. A programmer built a prototype and continued expanding it. An artist transformed experiences from working life into memorable characters. An independent founder brought those efforts together under Mephitideus Interactive.
The result is a game with a personal history behind its cartoon exterior.
For Marc Abel, the hurdles of real life provided more than inspiration. They became art—something to reshape, exaggerate, and share with others.
And in Skunked: Way of the Spray, players get to jump into that world and face those hurdles for themselves.
